Come and work at the Museum of Oxford…for free!

The Museum of Oxford is seeking volunteers during the summer to learn about the museum and its collections and to engage with visitors. It is offering six to eight week placements where you will be able to steward the galleries, help collect and collate visitor feedback as well as engaging with the visiting public. This opportunity would suit those looking for work in museums and heritage and will give invaluable experience with a vast range of people (but no salary).

Those interested should send a brief statement of interest to museum@oxford.gov.uk and be able to commit to a minimum of 4 hours per week over the summer months.  Applicants also need to be available for an induction on the 14th of July to be able to start during the week commencing the 21st of July. Please contact David on 01865 252417 for an informal discussion if you are interested in these placements.

House to house collections – which ones are reputable?

A resident has alerted us to a very useful Freedom of Information request concerning collection bags. It would appear that at least three ‘charitable organisations’ have put collection requests through Headington doors without house to house collection permits

1)    The following collectors have current House to House Collection Permits issued by Oxford City Council for the specified dates:

Be Child Cancer Aware (BCCA) – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

Crossroads Church and Community Centre – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

A Smile for a Child – 01.01.2014 to 10.11.2014

Royal Orthopaedic Hospital – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

The Air Ambulance Service 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014– 01.01.2014 to 30.06.2014

British Forces Foundation – 01.01.2014 50 19.07.2014

The Leukaemia Care Society  – 01.06.2014 to 31.05.2015

Sri Lankan Muslim Community Foundation Of Milton Keynes – 16.09.2014 to 05.10.2014

Child And Teenager Cancer Leukaemia – 16.06.2014 to 30.11.2014

Kids Out UK – 01.04.2014 to 31.03.2015

Margaret Green Animal Rescue Animal Sanctuary – 01.04.2014 to 31.03.2015

Children’s Hearts – 01.04.2014 to 31.03.2015

Woodlands Cancer Care – 01.04.2014 to 31.03.2015

2)    The following charities hold Cabinet Office Order of Exemption Certificates and, therefore, do not need to apply to the Local Authority but they have provided the Council with their proposed collection dates:

The Royal British Legion – 25.10.2014 to 08.11.2014

Macmillan Cancer Support – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

Make a Wish Foundation UK – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

Barnardo’s – 09.06.2014 to 20.06.2014

NSPCC – 01.01.2014 to 01.07.2014

Clothes Aid – 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014

The Sailors Society – 04.07.2014 to 18.07.2014

Royal Air Forces Association – 08.09.2014 to 20.09.2014

If you receive door to door collection requests from an organisation which is NOT on the above list, please report it to the Council on 01865 252561 to check if specific collectors hold the relevant permits.

Begging on the streets of Oxford

Oxford City Council and partner organisations are asking visitors to the city not to give money to people who beg. Instead, they encourage those who want to help to make donations to the Oxford Homeless Medical Fund. This fund supports a health service dedicated to homeless people in Oxford.
