Accident figures down for Headington

The County officer responsible for the recording of accident data has confirmed to us that in the 12 months following road improvements in November 2010, the number of recorded accidents in the stretch of London Road between Osler Rd and Wharton Road was 3, compared with an average of around 8 per year in the 5 years prior to the scheme.

It’s difficult to draw definite conclusions from such a small amount of data, and figures can blip quite easily from one year to another, but this is still very positive news

    Ruth,

As an observation I would like to point out that the original reports stated that the average for the type of road were twice the national average for similar roads. Statistically the number may have been reduced (yet to be seen in years to come as you say) but only to the average.

The goal of the scheme was to reduce the severity of accidents as well as frequency, it would be nice to see whether the reported number of 4 serious accidents prior to the roadworks has been reduced as well which in some ways is more significant to local residents as these were in the majority pedestrians presumably people from the local area.

One of the other objectives was to increase the reliability of bus journey times and make them quicker from Oxford to the ringroad and vice versa as can be seen below in the Transport section of the Cabinet meeting minutes from 15th September 2009.

“This is the third section of the London Road Corridor to be developed to make bus journeys quicker and more reliable and improve road safety for all users. Additionally this project seeks to enhance the Headington Shopping Centre through the use of quality surface materials to footway areas and the de-cluttering of unnecessary street furniture. The scheme was the subject of a public consultation process and Transport Decisions Committee approved the final design on 2 July 2009.”

Do the council have any statistics yet that can indicate whether these journey times have improved based on both of these criteria?

I would also be very interested to see published whether the budget of £2.035 million was met.
