Regulations to make landlords install smoke alarms

The call for mandatory smoke alarms has formed a central part of the LGA’s key report ‘The Fire and Rescue Service: Making our Nation Safer’. This document sets out a blueprint for the next government, with a series of proposals for how fire and rescue services can improve fire safety and save the public purse money.

Lib Dem ministers in government have tabled regulations before the end of this Parliament requiring all private sector landlords to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms .

While the majority of private sector landlords are reputable and voluntarily install alarms, there are a small minority who do not, needlessly putting lives at risk. They have a duty of care to their tenants and this important measure will ensure this is met. A working smoke alarm can make the difference between life and death and should be seen as every bit as essential as a lock on the front door.

Alasdair Murray is Lib Dem candidate for Oxford East

Alasdair

Alasdair Murray lives in the heart of the Oxford East constituency with his wife – a director of a patient information forum – and his two children. He was educated at Oxford University and has worked as an economics journalist on a national newspaper and policy expert at two leading British think tanks. Alasdair is now a consultant and writer as well as serving as a trustee for two national charities.

With two children in a local community school and a wife who is a school governor, Alasdair is acutely aware of the challenges the education system in Oxford faces and wants to accelerate the improvements that have been made in the last few years. If elected as an MP, he would also campaign to ensure Oxford finally has the powers necessary to alleviate the City’s housing crisis and improve its creaking infrastructure.

Alasdair has been an active Lib Dem member for more than a decade. He is delighted to have the opportunity to stand in his home constituency at this election and is seeking to build on the close second the party achieved to Labour in 2010.

Ruth, Roz and Altaf are delighted to campaign with him in Headington.

Windmill School pedestrian crossing latest

The installation of the new zebra crossing in Margaret Road has suffered many setbacks, however it seems that it may be operational starting in the middle of next week. Our latest information is this:

There has been a lot of conversation with SSE about the installation of the zebra crossing poles and beacons.

They have now been installed and weather permitting the lining crew will be on site today to install the line.

Once this has been done we will let the SSE know and they will put in the fuses and commission the lights.

Hopefully it will be all completed by Monday / Tuesday of next week.

Will Headington Post Office move to the Co-op?

The Mid-Counties Co-op has confirmed to us that it has expressed strong interest in hosting Headington Post Office within its current supermarket premises in London Road.

Residents may remember that the Cowley Centre post office relocated from Barns Road to the Co-op in Templars Square and is very well used.

If the Co-op is to go ahead, a public consultation will be held. This is encouraging news for those residents who had heard rumours that Headington’s Post Office would close. No timescales are confirmed at present.
