Launch of Coalition Govt. superfast broadband scheme in Oxford

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has funded a £3.1million scheme which enables Oxford City Council to offer eligible small and medium sized businesses a voucher of between £250 – £3,000, towards superfast broadband installation costs.

The broadband connection voucher scheme is funded by government and administered by local authorities.

There are over 150 suppliers on board, including many local suppliers. Applying for a voucher is simple and can be easily done online. By using the postcode checker a business can check that it is eligible to apply, then simply obtain two quotes from the list of approved suppliers and submit the application.

Superfast Broadband brings many benefits to small and medium sized businesses such as increased work efficiency, saving time and resources and reducing the need to travel. Go online for details on how to apply and the full list of business benefits.

Headington Protest gets national TV coverage

Walk of protest 2

Around 80 Headington residents joined Headington Lib Dem councillors on a Walk of Protest in London Road last Saturday morning. It was clear for all to see that parts of the London Road surface had degraded to such an extent that the only solution is to re-build the road itself.

The demonstration was covered by the Oxford Mail, Jack FM, Brookes TV and Geo TV, the breaking news channel on world issues in Urdu.

It is clear that this issue above all others is of great concern to all who live and work in Headington, and we shall be campaigning hard for a re-build. The situation has become so bad that a resurface would only be a temporary, not a permanent solution. We need a re-build NOW!

Literary inspiration in your local parks

Oxford’s parks and open spaces have provided inspiration for many authors and their literary works, so what better excuse to visit some of them and celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 6 March

Bury Knowle Park has a host of literary links as well as a great Library.

  • The CS Lewis favourite, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, was the inspiration for the parks magical play area, with its very own wardrobe entrance, themed animals and undulating mounds.
  • In front of Bury Knowle House you can find the Story Book Tree, which is surrounded by half a dozen carved seats depicting different characters, including Reepicheep, the mouse.

JRR Tolkien’s final resting place in Wolvercote Cemetery is visited by many locals and visitors to commemorate his fantasy based novels, including the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Lewis Carroll is often thought to have travelled along the river to Iffley and may have visited the famous Yew tree to help write his Alice in Wonderland adventures.

Parks are a great place to read to children of all ages, why not re-visit the adventures Percy the Park Keeper and his animal friends, follow in the Gruffalo’s footsteps or look for the Bog Baby in the woods, have a Where’s Wally themed game of hide and seek, or just sit and enjoy your favourite book in the peace and tranquility that the great outdoors offers.

Mark Mann, Parliamentary Candidate for Oxford East

Mark Mann brings youth, energy, enthusiasm and tenacity to Headington following his election as Parliamentary Candidate for Oxford East. He gained a PhD from Cambridge in Nanotechnology and Electrical Engineering.  After a spell of tutoring, research and project management there, and work as a lecturer in Seoul, Mark now works for the BBC as a research engineer developing new media technology. He and his wife Karen are moving to the Oxford area shortly to be close to family, along with daughter Tilly and two week old Henry. Mark says:

I want to get the success stories of our time in Government such as the raising of the income tax threshold and the pupil premium out to the people of Oxford. I will campaign for the construction of more affordable homes in the wider Oxford area.

Mark enthusiastically supported the Headington Lib Dem Councillor-led Walk of Protest on Saturday to campaign for the London Road to be rebuilt, and was interviewed by Brookes TV before heading off with Ruth and Altaf to carry out door to door surveys in Osler Road and Old High Street all afternoon.
