Industrial action update from Oxford Bus

We have just received the following statement from the managing director of Oxford Bus Company.

I am writing to update you on the dispute with Unite the Union over Christmas and New Year working and pay negotiations that led to the strike action taken on 2 and 6 March 2017.

Constructive talks have been taking place since the second day of action and I am pleased to advise you that the company has made an offer to Unite that the majority of its members have accepted. This means that the dispute has now been resolved and there should be no further disruption to our services as a result of strike action.

This has been a very difficult time for the company and I very much regret any inconvenience this dispute has caused. I would also like to thank you for your patience whilst a resolution was sought. We can now get back to working together to deliver the high quality bus services that we all strive to achieve on a daily basis.

Concert by Headington Singers Friday 31st March

Viva Vienna! is the name of the Headington Singers’  next concert on Friday 31 March when they celebrate three composers with links to the city – Mozart, Schubert and Bruckner.

Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus is a much-loved choral masterpiece in miniature and is followed by the sublime Clarinet concerto. This will be played by David Mears who is a real talent in the making. Though still a student, David recently made his debut at the Wigmore Hall where his playing was described as ‘superb’.

Schubert’s Mass in A flat major is both tuneful and dramatic and is seen as one his “finest and most substantial settings of the mass”. The soloists will be Rebecca Van Den Berg (soprano), Stephanie Windsor-Lewis (alto), Jonathan Todd (tenor) and Will Orr (bass).

Bruckner is represented by three of his celebrated Motets – Locus iste, Christus factus est and Ecce Sacerdos.  These are hauntingly beautiful sacred pieces for choir.

The choir will be accompanied by the Headington Singers Orchestra.

The concert is at All Saints Church, Lime Walk at 7.30pm as usual and tickets can be bought on the door (£12, £10 concessions, children free).

New crossing at Old Road/Gipsy Lane – why no bleeps?

We’ve had lots of complaints from residents that there is no audible crossing signal at the bottom of Old Road, crossing to Valentia Road and Gipsy Lane. We have asked the County Council why not. They have sent us the above leaflet and you will find their reply below.

Some of the pedestrian crossings can be served while other traffic is flowing, so we can give more opportunities to cross and reduce pedestrian waiting times significantly. This means that some crossings are at green while others are at red. If a visually impaired person is waiting at one crossing when a nearby crossing starts to bleep there is a very real concern that they may accidentally cross against a red man. I’m afraid we can’t have audibles here. For disabled users we do have the tactile rotating cone.

 I have attached the DfT leaflet in case you have other queries. This is intended to introduce pedestrians to the idea and explain how they are kept safe. This applies with or without audibles.

Latest news on “Better Oxfordshire” unitary bid

The County Council’s Cabinet voted today to submit a unitary bid proposal called  “A new council for a better Oxfordshire” to Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The proposal was co-written by the County Council, South Oxfordshire District Council, and the Vale of White Horse Council, and all three authorities have now voted through executive decisions to press on with the submission.

The proposal can be seen at betteroxfordshire.org.uk

It makes a case for abolishing the existing two tier structure of six councils and replacing them with one new council for the whole of Oxfordshire.

If the proposal gets the backing of the Secretary of State, (this is by no means certain) it is possible that those elected to office in the May 2017 elections will only serve for two years until 2019, and the Oxford City Council elections might be suspended in 2018 allowing existing City councillors to continue until 2019. At that point, all out elections would take place for the new authority.

Oxford City Council’s “Hands off Oxford City” campaign has now come to a close. Over the next few weeks it will:

  • Develop an alternative proposal which creates a partnership body to oversee spacial planning and infrastructure invested in the County with the aim to get all Councils to work together;
  • Provide Government with an independent assessment of public opinion;
  • Commission an independent and detailed analysis of the County Council Unitary proposals and publish that; and
  • Ensure local stakeholders and the public know there is an alternative and publicise the results of public services.
