The police have supplied more information about Sunday’s incident. The fire service stated to the police that they suspected arson on the basis that normally things don’t just set on fire themselves, but could not confirm arson as they were unable to get into the box at the time. They have said that there is a number of non criminal explanations but they like to make sure its fully investigated and ruled out.
The police have spoken to Royal Mail who have said that upon opening the post box there were 2 -3 damaged letters but the rest were fine, there was also nothing at all in the way of an ignition source in the box.
It remains a mystery as to how this fire started but it is assumed that it is an isolated case.
One of the PCSOs will be doing some door knocks in the next couple of days and hopefully putting peoples minds at rest but if anyone has any concerns that they would like to discuss then please contact the Neighbourhood Police Team.
Royal Mail has sealed the postbox for cleaning, once it is unsealed it is back in business
