Signage for the Hospital energy works project

Contractors have agreed to put up signs advising cyclists to dismount when using footpaths in roads affected by the works, after we followed up a suggestion from a Lime Walk resident.

We have discussed signage with the contractors at some length, and residents have written to us complaining that traffic is U-turning at the bottom of Bickerton Road. We’ve agreed with Vital Energi that signs off Old Road will advise that the road is closed except for access. Other signs in and around Stapleton Road are also being moved.

If you see any signs that are misleading or placed incorrectly, please let us know.

Of course drivers are u-turning at the end of Bickerton Road – they are following signs that say ‘diversion’.

According the plan drawn up, there’s was to be no sign in Stapleton Road that said you couldn’t get through All Saints Road to Latimer Road, but there was a sign at the entrance to Bickerton saying ‘diverted traffic’. Only once they’ve turned into All Saints Road they discover that’s closed, and they have to turn around and go back.

The plan has been drawn up as if the only thing that happens in these roads is residents accessing their properties – not that this is route through Headington taken by hundreds of vehicles every day.

    • We’ve had this problem all the way through, Mike. It seems the County Council in particular has no understanding of how many people use this area. Ditto with the contractors with regard to cyclists . The signage was apparently put in place to show vehicle drivers in one side of All Saints Road how to get to the other side of All Saints Road, without an understanding of principal vehicle movements in the area. We’ve asked the County’s networks team to keep an eye on signage for us but comments from residents would be especially welcome.
